03 / The maker

A return to
making by hand.

Fat Fox Woodworking is a small, independent studio owned and run by furniture maker Ali G.

After about two decades working in technology, Ali returned to the creative, hands-on work he has always been drawn to. He has spent about seven years developing his woodworking craft and is now beginning to take on custom commissions.

A father of three, Ali grew up in Fairfax and lived in Washington, DC for nearly two decades. He has since returned to Northern Virginia, where he is building Fat Fox Woodworking as a one-person studio and pursuing the craft more seriously.

I can’t even begin to describe how happy I am with a Fat Fox Woodworking end grain cutting board I purchased earlier this year. It was the perfect gift for my wife’s birthday leading up to a vineyard celebration we organized to celebrate with friends. Not only is the craftsmanship superb, pricing for this large piece was by far the most competitive after spending hours searching on Etsy and other sites.

It looked phenomenal as a center piece holding charcuterie in Instagram pics we posted with beautiful VA Blue Ridge Mountains on the backdrop at vineyards. It also looks great in its permanent spot as a decorative piece on our dining room. Thanks, Fat Fox!

Fat Fox Woodworking did an amazing job building the arch for our wedding and it was just gorgeous with the mountains as the backdrop.

The owner was easy to work with as well. We gave him our vision and he quickly went to work, sketching up an idea and providing us an opportunity to provide feedback (which we didn't have any feedback on). He also designed it so assembly and disassembly was seamless.

I would fully recommend working with this company for any of your carpentry/woodworking needs!

I have two beautiful pieces from Fat Fox: A gorgeous multi-color/wood heavy weight cutting board that has held up beautifully for several years (and it came with helpful instructions for how to keep it in great condition), and a custom set of hexagonal wall shelves. On those, I presented the vision and we worked together on the specs and they came out perfectly! I’m a happy customer and would recommend Fat Fox to anyone.
